About Western Series

Sheba Prokashoni introduced the Western series to the Bangladeshi readers during the 80s. The aforesaid series portrays the life and culture of the Old West (popularly known as Wild West) within the framework of adventurous stories.

The Old West is perhaps one of the most fascinating periods in the history of the United States. The Wild West occurred when settlers and pioneers attempted to populate the territories west of the Mississippi River, and it continued after the Civil War, lasting around two centuries. Almost all of the Old West stories feature gunslingers robbing banks and trains, cowboys on long cattle drives, quest for lost treasures, tribal and territorial warfare, battles between ranchers, clashes between the law and the outlaw, and so on.

Most of Sheba Western books are adaptations of foreign stories in Bangla. Qazi Mahbub Hossain penned the first Western book for Sheba Prokashoni, which was Aakranto Sohor by name. The most recognized writers of the Western series include: Qazi Mahbub Hossain, Saokot Hossain, Raoshan Jamil, Kazi Shahnoor Hossain, and Qazi Maimur Husain.

Today we take this opportunity to share a Western novel entitled Aakranto Sohor. Hope you would thoroughly enjoy this book!

It won’t be an overstatement if Björk’s Utopia is called an essentially nature inspired song. As the name suggests, the song transports us into a dreamy, ideal world populated mostly by birds. However, after a few moments the song startles the audience when the artist discards the existence of the bird species. Then she claims that the first flute was created from the fauna, implying the fact that the birds in fact, are the flutes:

“Bird species never seen or heard before
The first flute carved from the first fauna”

To visualize this Björk used a host of Icelandic women playing flutes, which represents the chirping of birds. The scene is dreamy, heavenly, and ecstatic. In facts, the birds have enabled her to create a relaxing ideal world or Utopia. The melodious sound effect from the flutes accompanied by the singer’s calm but intense voice make her world more engaging and enchanting, thereby strongly compelling the audience entering into it for living peacefully.

Meaning of Björk’s “Utopia”

However, breaking the utopian tradition, soon Björk confronts us with the ugliness behind this fanciful world. She wants to say that we don't need to go somewhere else to see this ugliness. The world itself is the Utopia since behind its eye-catching surface appearance there is another antithetical inner look which is full of evil, injustice, dishonesty, barbarism, and so the like. God entrusted nature to guide us towards the right path. But as human beings have a predilection to evil by birth they never follow the right path:

“Utopia
It’s not
Elsewhere

You assigned me to protect our lantern
To be intentional about the light”

Horrified by these dark sides, the singer, the queen of the birds/nature feels an urge for purifying the evil which lies deep down the human heart. She reinforces this by saying “Let’s get out of here!” But this is not actually a call for escape from the world, rather a request for renouncement of evil:

“My instinct has been shouting at me for years
Saying let’s get out of here
Huge toxic tumor bulging underneath the ground here
Purify, purify, purify, purify toxicity”

There are also strong indications of feminist thoughts in this song. All the birds are represented by females, which emblems the womankind. The weirdly-clad women were playing flutes in pensive mode indicating the zeal for female emancipation. The grotesque organ on the upper portion of the singer’s body resembles most possibly to a female vulva which is again symbolic of womanhood.

Jerome K. Jerome (1859-1927) was an English humorist, novelist and playwright who wrote during the Victorian period. Now his reputation chiefly rests on his comic masterpiece Three Men in a Boat (1889).

His full name is Jerome Klapka Jerome. His middle name was in honour of a family friend, Hungarian exile and hero George Klapka. He was born on the second day of May 1859 in Belsize House, Bradford Street, Walsall, Staffordshire, Central England. He was the fourth child born to Jerome Clapp Jerome, (1807–1872) and Marguerite Jones (d. 1872).  Jerome had two sisters, Paulina Deodata and Blandina Dominica, and a brother Milton Melancthon. His father died when he was just 13 years old. Two years later his mother died as well. Losing both parents Jerome’s family encountered untold financial misery. Consequently, he was bound to leave school to work menial jobs. Till his twenties he engaged himself in a number of jobs such as journalism, acting, teaching, etc.

Jerome married Georgina Elizabeth Henrietta Stanley Marris, in 1888. Georgina was a divorcee and had a daughter named Elsie from her previous marriage. The newlywed couple spent their honeymoon rowing on the Thames. That very experience inspired Jerome to pen his seminal work Three Men in a Boat. However, in the book, he replaced wife, Georgina by his longtime friends George Wingrave (George) and Carl Hentschel (Harris).

The subject novel was serialized in Home Chimes in 1889. Three Men in a Boat was very lucrative for Jerome since it earned him lots of money. Surprisingly, although the work did not received critical acclaim, it was well-accepted by the audience form all social strata. The success of the book inspired him to accept writing as the fulltime profession. However, his later publications received little critical as well as audience reception. He even sought to regain his popularity through a sequel to Three Men in a Boat called Three Men on the Bummel in 1898. However, the book failed to gain any positive reception either from the critics or the audience. Resultantly, Three Men in a Boat remains his undoubted masterpiece to this date. Jerome K. Jerome died in 1927 of a stroke.

Today we will share the Bangla translation Three Men in a Boat. The details of the aforesaid book are as under:
